SEPTEMBER MENTOR MEETING!!!

September, 2019

Since I have made a decision to be apart of the Excel Teacher Cadet Program one of my responsibilities or requirements is to a mentor! A mentor is someone who guides you, helps you, and make sure that you are on the right path! The process we took to finding a mentor showed us professionalism, consistency, networking, and responsibility. I arranged to meet with my mentor on September 26, 2019. When I first arrived to the meeting with my mentor we talked about my plans, and what I had been up to over the years. I spoke to her about my current home situation, and some of my plans for paying for college and my plans for the current year and for the year of 2020. My mentor encouraged me and enlightened me on what she thought what be best for me. I stayed with my mentor for the whole day and after it was time for her to go get her students from pull-out she came back to the classroom and told the students to get out their " magnetic boards". Which was something new to me, because we didn't have them when I was in elementary school. As my mentor was teaching I was observing her room and realized that she had a schedule that her, and her students followed every day. Which included the core lessons, pull-outs, recess, and lunch. Basically the schedule for the whole day, I also noticed that some students were on task and some were engaged in other things around them such as other classmates, their snacks they brought from home, and eager to leave for their first recess. My mentor and I also discussed the educational system and the issues we thought should be taken care of. Once, the kids got done with recess, she took them back to the classroom and there they worked on math until it was time for lunch during this time I noticed that the way I learned math and the way these fourth graders in 2019 were learning math was totally different. Lunch time was finally here, and she explained to me that schools have different responsibilities for their teachers to do without pay. Which was something new to me, spending the day with her showed me the real ropes of teaching from seven in the morning to dismissal time. After, observing my mentor and talking to her I see that being a teacher takes a lot of time, planning, and effort. Every student is different, and has their own personally needs, so this career has a lot of side jobs that's not just standing in the front of the classroom and teaching. During our next month I would like to discuss how she interacts with other teachers and how they collaborate with one another and discuss more of her duties during school and out of school.
