A Time of Realization

September, 2019

It has taken me a long time to take a step towards change, and having consistency. During the month of September I was given the opportunity to really put my goals into action. The Excel Teacher Cadets were asked to attend a meeting with different school districts, entrepreneurs, and educators in discussing ways and methods to change the educational system. When we first arrived at the meeting we were sat at the front of the room with hundred of adults surrounding us, which was scary and nerve wrecking for me! The speaker or head coordinator of the meeting asked all the Teacher Cadets to introduce themselves stating " what grade we were in", " what school we attend", and "our names"! After, we introduce ourselves the coordinator asked for one of the teacher cadets to speak about an issue we think is happening in the educational system. At first, I wasn't going to speak about what I thought was an big issue regarding today's educational system, but I put my pride to the side and decided to voice my opinion. I was very grateful to have been given the opportunity to come out of my shell! Once I finished talking the speaker asked for one of the adults in the room to stand and give an overview of what they have been discussing and learning throughout the day. While I was listening to what the adults had been learning I soon realized that what I said about the educational system coincided with what the adults thought as well. When the man finished giving the overview, the head coordinator released us for a quick lunch, after the teacher cadets finished with lunch we were asked questions about how we feel about the school, what we think should be changed in schools and what should be the focus of school. Once that discussion was over we watched a video on an ideal high school and how the school gets their students ready for the real world and their process of doing so.
Ten minutes later the video ended from that point on we discussed our thoughts on the video for about ten minutes then we watched another video on the top ten things that are important in schools and in educating. For twelve years, I have been bullied and talked about because I stutter, stuttering has stopped me from voicing my opinion and from being who I truly am. I use to sit in class and have so much input on the lessons and different ways to solve problems but I never took the initiative to believe in myself and blossom! Not until I was pushed and encouraged during this meeting to talk and speak up, once the meeting was over I felt so happy, and full of life I wanted to talk more and network more with others! From now on, I will believe in myself, encourage myself, accept myself, and push myself to VOICE MY OPINION!
